Hawaiian, raw and organic

E-mail Print PDF

IslandI find myself in a position on Maui where being organic is quite expensive, and it's sometimes a tough call to make.

An organic, locally-grown papaya is $6.89 here in Kihei; non-organic is $1.29.

Granted, the organic one tastes ten times better than the non-organic, but still, $7 for a papaya?

At the local farmer's market I'm getting the kama'aina (local's) discount, and I can get locally-grown papaya for $1.50, but it's not organic.

What to do, what to do? An entire meal at the greasy burger place is only $3.

At times like these I ask myself, what is my health worth?

Then, despite the cost, I buy the deluxe, ripe, locally-grown organic papaya, take it home and have a feast.

I'm worth it.

If I have to compromise I'll ride my bike instead of drive, but I'm not compromising on my diet.
